When it comes to her finances, Leah Messer admits she’s down.
But the veteran Teen Mom star wants to make one thing clear:
she is anything but outside.
Earlier this week, we learned that Messer is more than $700,000 in debt, as the IRS hit her with a new tax lien for not paying what she owes the government.
OHHey??
The new lien amounts to $290,297, the result of unpaid federal taxes for the years 2018, 2020 and 2021; brings the total amount Messer owes to around $780,000.
What gives?
How is this possible?!?
“I have worked with many different accountants over the years,” Messer now explains a In weekly contact.
“At first, I was filing and paying more than I was making and then I was paying people who made me delay while they ‘managed the tax situation.’
“Apparently it is a long process.
“Then in 2020 the IRS was backed up like everyone else because of COVID. I initially fell behind after my divorce from [Jeremy Calvert] and when I went to the rehab center.”
Messer, who currently stands out as an MTV personality/employee, continued with the tabloid:
“I didn’t grow up with the income I have now, [and] I did not have the guidance that a 16-year-old girl should have had in managing money responsibly and making healthy financial planning decisions.”
From what we can gather, Messer is running in the six figures these days.
She’ll earn even more if she ever gets her own Teen Mom spin-off.
“I’m figuring this all out on my own and passing the advice on to the next generation of women in my family as I learn,” Leah continued on In Touch.
“Let this be an example to everyone here: take that boring finance class in high school or college.
“Your future self will thank you!”
Let the Messer situation be a lesson for everyone, in other words.
Leah, who shares twin daughters Ali and Aleeah with ex-husband Corey Simms and a daughter Addie with her second ex-husband Jeremy, went on to say she shouldn’t be counted out as she’s on her way to paying off her debt.
She concluded:
“Last year I connected with an amazing accountant and tax attorney who is helping me get through this.
“My hope going forward is to bring awareness and the same wisdom that I have gathered over the past year to my platform.
“When you know better, DO it better. This will be fixed sooner rather than later!
