The Hindi film, “The Kerala Story,” is a fictional work inspired by real events, about a group of women from Kerala who joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). However, several petitions were filed seeking restraining orders against the release of the film due to a teaser released in November 2022 that allegedly showed innocent girls being lured and converted to Islam over time.

The petitioners claimed that the film, which claims to be based on true facts, is false and misleading, likely to hurt religious sentiments, and spread hatred between communities in India. Some even equated the film to hate speech. The petitions were initially filed in the Supreme Court under Article 32 of the Constitution of India, but the court found that the petitioners could seek relief in the appropriate High Court instead. The producers, Vipul Shah and Sunshine Pictures Pvt. Ltd., were represented by Mr. Ameet Naik, Managing Partner of Naik, Naik and Company, who opposed the grant of any relief against the release and exploitation of the film.

The film carries a disclaimer that it is a work of fiction and does not claim historical and factual accuracy. Despite opposition, both the Kerala High Court and the Chennai High Court refused to grant any reliefs against the filmmakers and the movie. According to the Kerela High Court, the trailer of the film does not contain any form of offensive allegation against Islam nor any specific religion. Additionally, it was noted that the film carries an appropriate disclaimer and is certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to be fit for public exhibition.

As a result, the film was released worldwide after a three-day-long drama.
