In the end, “Barbenheimer” lived up to expectations.

The opening of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” on the same day brought moviegoers to theaters in droves, and the double feature kick-started one of Hollywood’s biggest weekends.

“Barbie” is a bright, snappy comedy, while “Oppenheimer” is a three-hour adult biopic. Still, Many fans have paired the wildly different movies into a must-see double feature.

So while the movies share nothing more than a release date, their box office performances have been intertwined. Due to the “Barbenheimer” effect, many moviegoers who had only planned to see one of the two films ended up seeing both.

“The buildup…kept increasing the intensity with which people were excited to see these movies,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

When the forecasts for the two films began, experts predicted “Barbie” would have an opening weekend in the $50 million to $60 million rangewhile “Oppenheimer” seemed set to sell $30-40 million worth of tickets.

Those forecasts kept rising, and this weekend the public beat those numbers. “Barbenheimer” grossed $246.2 million at the box office, according to Comscore. “Barbie’s” The $162 million share of that figure set the record for biggest opening weekend for a female director.

“Some theaters had to add performances for both ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie,'” says Dergarabedian. “They had to expand the market to accommodate this incredible demand. That’s very rare.”
