Whether it’s for a wedding or a casual shopping trip, the designers suggest ways to style the truly versatile wardrobe hero for different occasions.
Slip skirts, negligees, lingerie-inspired intimates and skintight boudoir separates defined 1990s fashion.
For its spring 1997 haute couture, Chanel threw a feast for lovers of slip dresses. Perry Ellis, Versace, and John Galliano also experimented with the style in their own lyrics around the same time. Supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell graced red carpets with their tiny, beaded, gauzy numbers on satin or chainmail fabrics reminiscent of the era.
This season, the slip skirt is making a comeback. From Chanel and Miu Miu to Gucci and Maison Margiela, various brands bring their new take on the slip dress.
We asked some designers how to style the slip dress for different occasions. This is what they had to say:
Designer Dolly J. notes that fashionistas find interesting ways to style these skirts to create unique looks depending on the occasion. “Because the skirt is so versatile, I personally think that if you put it together well, it can be worn anywhere and at any time of the day. It’s made of different fabrics, like cotton, silk, and georgette, and also with various prints,” she says. .
Dolly suggests that for a casual outing, these skirts can be paired with an oversized sweatshirt or regular tucked-in t-shirt or tank top with a jean jacket. “The look can be completed with sneakers. For a formal meeting look, the skirt can be teamed with cool shirts and stilettos along with dainty jewelry. For a glamorous look, a slip skirt in a shimmery fabric can be worn with a sequined bustier and a flowing cape. This is a look I also incorporated into my couture collection,” adds Dolly.
Sahib Singh Bhatia, Creative Director of Amaaré, says that the slip skirt looks elegant when paired with a crop top or blouse, which accentuates the silhouette and shows off the unique style. “Whether you choose a patterned slip skirt with a solid top or create a monochrome ensemble, this combination makes a fashion statement. Style the skirt casually with a cropped T-shirt and a jean jacket, or opt for a formal look with a dress tucked in. white shirt and blazer. For parties or weddings, pair it with a crop top and add a cape for an elegant touch,” says Bhatia.
Designer Sameer Madan hails it as an easy staple piece that can be dressed up or down. “It can be paired with on-trend staples like blazers or a casual t-shirt. Throw on heels and flats with a crisp white shirt or relaxed sweater for an incredibly chic look,” says Madan.
The founder of the RaMa brand, Rajeswari Mavuri, suggests that the slip skirt can be teamed with a matching crop top, a pair of Birkenstocks and a saddle bag. “Alternatively, pair it with an oversized cardigan and Chelsea boots, along with a bucket bag,” she says.
Designer Surmai Jain of Polite Society suggests investing in a high-slit bandeau skirt. “She styles the slip skirt with a plain white tank top for a chic evening look. Or with a matching bandeau top for date night or a girls’ night out,” she suggests.
