The Indianapolis Colts have announced that they have released veteran quarterback Nick Foles, freeing up approximately $2 million in salary cap space. The move was expected following the team’s selection of former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in last week’s 2023 NFL Draft. Foles lost both of his starts during the 2022 season, with his only year with the Colts. He started 58 of his 71 career games during his 11-year career, which took him from Philadelphia to St. Louis to Kansas City, back to Philadelphia, Jacksonville, Chicago, and, finally, Indy. The Super Bowl LII MVP had completed 1,302 of 2,087 passes for 14,227 yards with 82 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.
The release of Foles is yet another roster shake-up in this week’s flurry of activity for Indianapolis. The Colts also signed seven draft picks, including cornerback Darius Rush, safety Daniel Scott, tight end Will Mallory, running back Evan Hull, defensive end Titus Leo, cornerback Jaylon Jones, and tackle Jake Witt. Additionally, 15 undrafted rookies have been brought on board, including four receivers and two linebackers.
Veteran Matt Ryan was similarly cut by the Colts in March after a lackluster season due to turnovers. With Foles’ release, the Colts are left with three quarterbacks on their depth chart, namely Richardson, Gardner Minshew, and Sam Ehlinger. Ehlinger and Foles both attended Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. These moves almost guarantee that Indianapolis will have a different opening-day starter for the seventh consecutive season.
It is worth noting that a total of nine players were waived by the Colts earlier this week, including defensive end Kameron Cline, tight ends Nikola Kalinic and Jalen Wydermyer, linebacker Forrest Rhyne, defensive tackle Chris Williams, running backs Darrynton Evans and Aaron Shampklin, cornerback David Vereen, and receiver Kristian Wilkerson.

Lastly, the Colts announced that their rookie minicamp began on Friday, where they officially signed their seven draft picks and 15 undrafted rookies. The team will head into the new season with a completely reshuffled roster, with Richardson expected to take over as quarterback. This move, along with a flurry of other signings, bodes well for the future of the Indianapolis Colts.
