A Mumbai-based private aerospace company has supplied critical components to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for its upcoming Chandrayaan-3 mission.
Liquid propulsion engines like Vikas, CE20 and satellite boosters for the lunar mission have been manufactured by Godrej Aerospace at its Vikhroli facility in suburban Mumbai, a senior company official said on Monday.
Maneck Behramkamdin, deputy vice president and chief commercial officer of Godrej Aerospace, said his company has been affiliated with ISRO, an entity under the Department of Space, for more than three decades.
“The collaboration started with the production of critical components to meet ISRO’s needs and later expanded to liquid propulsion engines,” Behramkamdin said.
Godrej Aerospace also had key contributions in the Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan space missions, as well as participating in other ISRO efforts.
Chandrayaan-3, scheduled for liftoff at 2:35 p.m. on Friday (July 14), will be a follow-up mission after Chandrayaan-2’s crash landing in September 2019 due to a software glitch.
This will be India’s third lunar mission and it is one of the few countries to have undertaken such an ambitious project.
Behramkamdin said that the company is investing Rs. Rs 250 crore to build a new facility at Khalapur in the coastal Raigad district of Maharashtra.
This brand new facility will have advanced manufacturing and assembly capabilities, allowing the company to improve its technological prowess and meet the growing demands of the space sector, it added.
