Billionaire Elon Musk’s xAI announced the formation of the artificial intelligence (AI) startup on Wednesday with the launch of its website, featuring a team made up of engineers who have worked at companies from Google-owned Alphabet to Microsoft and OpenAI. .
The startup will be headed by Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of Twitter, who has said on several occasions that AI development needs to stop and that the sector needs regulation.
“Announcing the formation of @xAI to understand reality,” Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday.
He website said xAI will hold a Twitter Spaces event on July 14.
Musk registered a company called X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, in March, according to a state filing.
The firm includes Musk as sole director and Jared Birchall, managing director of Musk’s family office, as secretary.
The website has also listed an app shape for interested candidates who want to be a part of the startup. The current xAI team claims to have worked at various organizations including “DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.”
In April, Musk said he seeks to build a “truth-seeking AI” that eschews political correctness, rivaling Microsoft’s OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. However, he has also expressed concern about the negative impacts of AI, calling it “civilization-destroying potential.”
Meanwhile, Musk has also merged Twitter with a newly created “X” shell company, keeping the platform’s brand name.
