Meta hired a team originally from Graphcore, a chip unicorn based in the UK, to build AI networking technology. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the hirings and stated that the engineers joined Meta’s infrastructure team to support the data centers. Meta is using AI technology for advertising, content selection, and content moderation on its platforms and is looking to expand its capabilities with generative AI products. The 10 employees were part of a team that worked on AI networking technology for Graphcore before the company announced a restructuring. Meta is designing its own chips, including a network chip for servers, and is also working on a computing chip for training AI models and performing inference, which should be ready by 2025. Graphcore was once seen as a potential competitor to Nvidia in the market for AI chip systems, but the company faced setbacks when a deal with Microsoft fell through, resulting in a write-down of investment by Sequoia. Nonetheless, Graphcore is “perfectly positioned” to take advantage of the growing commercial adoption of AI, according to a Graphcore spokesperson.
