The much talked about game Assassin’s Creed VR has been rebranded as Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, a virtual reality experience. Ubisoft made the announcement during the Meta Quest Games Showcase, which took place on Thursday night, confirming that it will be out “by the end of the year”, with more updates to be revealed during the Ubisoft Forward event on June 12. The showcase event was planned as a response to the cancellation of E3 2023, promising updates to the latest Ubisoft games, and will launch at 10:30pm IST/10am PT in the US.
Nexus VR would be the first Assassin’s Creed game to be played in virtual reality, which seems odd given the platform’s similarities to the franchise’s Animus machine that allows you to delve into key periods of the story. A little late, if you ask me. The project was originally confirmed in a 2021 blog post, which also mentioned a Splinter Cell VR game, though it got reportedly it was canceled last year along with three unannounced titles. The post also mentioned that Ubisoft Red Storm, the subsidiary responsible for tom clancy games, would lead the development of both VR games, with additional support from Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Dusseldorf and Ubisoft Mumbai.
Last year, Ubisoft confirmed several projects in development in the Assassin’s Creed universe, including two single-player experiences, a mobile game, and a hub called Assassin’s Creed Infinity. The latest one is designed to tie together a bunch of different AC games, with plans to include multiplayer experiences within it. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Red is set in the heart of feudal Japan, where you master the arts and weaponry of a shinobi, and is being developed by Ubisoft’s Quebec division, best known for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. There’s also AC Hexe, described as the “darkest” of the series, set during the last stages of the Holy Roman Empire, engulfed by witch trials. And finally, there’s Assassin’s Creed Jade, the mobile game set in China, which follows the same gameplay format as recent RPG-heavy entries.
Most recently, Assassin’s Creed Mirage got a confirmed October 12 release date, along with a gameplay trailer that delved into the franchise’s core approach of focusing on linear stealth-assassination gameplay, rather than gameplay. open world role playing Set in 9th century Baghdad, it follows Basim Ibn Ishaq, a minor character from AC Valhalla, who rises from impoverished pickpocket to becoming a master assassin for the Hidden One clan under the guidance of mentor Roshan (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Franchise trademarks like hidden blades, social stealth, and leaps of faith return, along with new additions like a pole vault mechanic to traverse parkour. Assassin’s Creed Mirage is available for pre-order now and will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR will be available later this year on the Meta Quest VR headset. More details about it will be revealed on June 12 at 10:30pm IST/10am PT in the US.
